By now, you probably know that I like the sweet and savory combination. The first thought that comes to mind is dessert. However, I started to think about a main dish that would have those flavors, soooo I thought of salted fish!
Salting the fish is a way of preserving it for later eating. This method was used in the nineteenth century and spread around the world (Africa, Caribbean, Asia, Europe). It gives a unique taste and texture to the fish. You can easily find salted fishes in your Asian store or afro-Caribbean store or your regular fish market. I have seen them before in a non-speciality fish market.
I usually get a salted mackerel, sea bass or cod. You can use any type of salted fish though. Sweet potatoes is a good alternative to potatoes, rice, plantains, etc… its sweetness elevates the dish. The peppers also bring some sweetness to it.
It’s relatively easy to make and it doesn’t require much time in the kitchen. With that said, get out of your comfort zone and try something new!

- 3 Sweet potatoes
- 1 cup Chopped Green, yellow, orange peppers
- 1 Onion
- 1/2 tsp Black pepper
- 1/3 cup Olive oil
Instructions
- Soak your fish in cold water 24 hours prior. If you haven’t, you can boil it for 30 min and drain them.
- Put some olive oil in a pan on medium high heat. Slightly pan fry your fish. While stirring, sautéed your onions for 3 min. Then, add your peppers with some black pepper for 3-4 minutes. Add a little bit of water to eat and let it simmer for 3 min, then turn it off.
- In a different sauce pan, boil your sweet potatoes in salted water for 15-20 min until they are soft but firm.
- Let them cool first, then remove the skin from your potatoes. Cut them in slices and put then on top of your fish and put the lid it. Let them simmer for a couple of minutes .
- Now, eat it!
Notes
If you have forgot to soak your fish the day before, you can boil it on low-high for 30 min. Drain the water and taste the fish. If it is still too salty, repeat the process until you get the desire amount of salt in your fish.
Please be aware that this process might break down your fish even more.
