Soft, delicious and easy chocolate crinkles recipe with orange zest that is perfect for the holidays.

The dessert season is here! I love baking cookies during the holidays. So, as they get older, my kids have grown to love cookies especially this time of the year. Usually I bake these cookies. However, this year, I have decided to make chocolate crinkles. I love the fissures that the cookies have beneath the icing sugar.

During a visit, a dear friend from Belgium brought me tons of Galler chocolate as a gift. Given Belgium is known for its high quality chocolate, Galler  did not disappoint . This silky and rich 70% cocoa chocolate is great quality and it makes just about all of your chocolate dessert taste delicious.

What type of chocolate should I use for chocolate crinkles?

You would want to use a chocolate that has 70% cocoa. I haven’t tried to make them with a chocolate that has less cocoa. Thankfully, I usually have 70% cocoa chocolate in my pantry. I have also seen chocolate crinkles recipe made with unsweetened cocoa powder it looks tasty.

Are chocolate crinkles healthy?

Truth be told, it’s a rich dessert. However, I use less eggs and sugar in my dessert recipe. I like my dessert not too sweet, just enough sugar and eggs to bind the ingredients together. I want to be able to enjoy the dessert without feeling like my teeth are about to fall off.

How to make easy chocolate crinkles recipe?

This easy! It’s the perfect recipe to make with your family. The dough is a little sticky but chilling it for a least 30 min helps. The kids will enjoy rolling it into small balls and covering it with icing sugar.

1. In a small saucepan, melt butter over low-medium heat. Turn off the heat.

2. Add all the chocolate pieces and stir with  spatula to melt the chocolate.

3. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.

4. In a large bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, orange zest, until it is homogenous.

5. Pour chocolate-butter mixture into egg mixture. Stir to combine.

6. Slowly incorporate dry ingredients into chocolate and egg mixture, stirring after each addition.

7. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Then,  chill dough in refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

8. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

9. Place 1/2 cup of icing sugar into a small dish. Using a small ice cream scoop, scoop dough and roll into balls. Then, roll the balls into icing sugar then place cookies 1 inch apart on a cookie sheet.

10. Bake for 12 min.

Can I freeze unbaked chocolate crinkles?

Yes! You can make in advance! After putting your dough in the fridge for 30 min. Make your cookies balls and freeze the unbaked balls without icing sugar in a freezer bag. When you are ready to use them, let them thaw for a few minutes then roll them in your icing sugar. Then proceed with the recipe. You may need to bake them for an extra 1-2 min.
